The Class That Can: Asthma

Dr. Wesley Sublett

Dr. J. Wesley Sublett is a board-certified allergist with Family Allergy and Asthma and is the Research Director of the Family Allergy & Asthma Research Institute. He is a graduate of Transylvania University (BA), St. Louis University (MPH) and the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He is board certified in both Pediatrics and Allergy & Immunology,

Dr. Wes completed his Internship and Residency in Pediatrics at the University of Louisville – Kosair Children’s Hospital. He went on to complete his Fellowship in Allergy, Asthma and Immunology at the University of Cincinnati. He and his family reside in Louisville.

Dr. Terri Laguna

Dr. Terri Laguna is a pediatric pulmonologist at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Dr. Laguna received her undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of New Mexico and her MD from the University of California, San Francisco.


Dr. Laguna completed her pediatric residency at the University of Washington and her pediatric pulmonology fellowship at the University of Colorado. She currently serves as the Division Head of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Laguna has asthma and her desire to take care of children with asthma inspired her to become a pediatric pulmonologist.

Dr. Jill Halterman

Dr. Jill Halterman is Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.  She is a practicing pediatrician and serves as Chief of the Division of General Pediatrics and Executive Vice Chair for the Department of Pediatrics.

Dr. Halterman runs a research program that has consisted of a sequence of community and school-based studies to better understand and improve care for historically marginalized children with asthma.

The scientific merit of her work has been acknowledged through multiple scientific publications, substantial funding from the National Institutes of Health, and inclusion of several of her publications in the national asthma and school health guidelines.

Dr. Carina Venter

Dr. Carina Venter is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Section of Allergy/Immunology at the Children’s Hospital Colorado and University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, where she is conducting research in allergy prevention and working with children with food allergies.


She is the past chair of the International Network of Dietitians and Nutritionists in Allergy, and a member of the American Academy of Allergyand Clinical Immunology (AAAAI), American College of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (ACAAI), European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) and the British Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (BSACI). She is currently chair of the EAACI Workgroup on Immunonutrition.

Dr. Venter is a senior advisor to Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE). She is a registered dietitian in the United Kingdom and United States. She has had publications in international journals, book chapters and is editor on a Food Allergy Book for Health Care Professionals. She moved from the UK in 2015 where she had been performing research into allergy prevention and prevention. She was a member of the EAACI and AAAAI food allergy guidelines on Allergy Prevention and was a member of the EAACI guidelines on the Diagnosis and Management of Food Allergy guidelines. She was also a member of the NICE (UK) food allergy guidelines. She was appointed to the expert panel of the National Institutes for Allergy and Infectious Diseases Peanut Allergy Prevention Guidelines.

Dr. Raina Gupta

Dr. Raina Gupta is a Board Certified Neurologist and Fellowship trained Board Certified Sleep Medicine Specialist located in Chicago, Illinois. She received her medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine, completed her Adult Neurology residency at Rush University Medical Center, and her Sleep Medicine Fellowship at University of Chicago.

Dr. Gupta serves as the Medical Director, a Clinical Neurologist and Sleep Medicine Specialist. As part of her practice Dr. Gupta has an opportunity to provide care for patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Central and Mixed Sleep Apnea, Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome, Insomnia, Narcolepsy, Restless Legs Syndrome, as well as many other sleep disorders. She also provides care for patients with Stroke, Seizures, Altered mental status, Dementia, Parkinson’s disease, Headaches, as well as many other Neurologic conditions.

Dr. Gupta has been involved in teaching medical students, internal medicine residents, family practice and dental residents through lectures, clinical bedside teaching and multiple grand rounds. She has also given talks to primary care physicians, subspecialists, and at community events. She is a speaker for the American Dental Sleep Medicine Association courses and for Telespecialists.

The Class That Can: Nutrition

Eileen Vincent

Eileen Vincent is a master’s prepared registered dietitian who has been involved in nutrition research for over two decades. She launched her research career by working as a NASA research assistant in Clear Lake, TX while also completing her joint dietetic internship/Master’s degree in clinical nutrition at Texas Women’s University in Houston. At Northwestern University, Eileen has served as a research interventionist, coordinating randomized clinical trials spanning from early life (pregnancy) through older adulthood. Major research projects include Women’s Health Initiative, NIH Nutrition Academic Award for Medical Students, Dietary Intervention Study in Children and Maternal-Offspring Metabolics: Family Intervention Trial. More recently, she has been involved in the planning a food allergy prevention study during infancy.

Eileen is also passionate about community-based nutrition programs in the Chicago area for individuals with limited resources. As a meal volunteer, she provides healthy meals to homeless individuals in the western suburbs. She also regularly volunteers at Greater Chicago Food Depository as well as her local community food pantry.

Dr. Wendy Sue Swanson

Dr. Wendy Sue Swanson is leading the way to a new age in medicine, in which innovations in digital, social media, and prevention leverage the combined wisdom of clinicians, patients, and researchers to help build stronger relationships. Dr. Swanson was the founder and Chief of Digital Innovation at Seattle Children’s Hospital in 2013, a community pediatrician, a weekly TV reporter, blogger, and has continued to be an important thought leader online for over a decade. Dr. Swanson speaks to digital health, innovation in public health, prevention, and healthcare advocacy. She provides pediatric advice to the press weekly. She is the Chief Medical Officer of Before Brands, makers ofSpoonfulOne, leading communication and health translation to clinicians and parents to protect against the development of food allergies.
